What can foreigners do to work in Japanese restaurants? What is the most important point?
When foreigners work in Japan, many foreigners come to Japan to decide which industries they work in, or where their seniors are already working. They’ve been getting ready in their home country and stand-by. The probability of success is very high, so we are doing our best in each country. I will introduce it in three series from now on. The first is to work for a Vietnamese “Izakaya“, a Japanese drinking place, chain. I will explain the point when working in Japan easily.
Is it a good way for people to call the same people?
・The first is the Vietnamese “tavern chain”; Men part, mostly women
・The second is “construction work worker” of the Huilipin people; Mostly male and female part
・The third session was “extensive work in agriculture” by Indonesians; There are a lot of men and women.
Three levels of communication
Some foreigners may think that if they can speak a word of Japanese, they will be able to do something about it. Greeting mode level, certainly this is the most important thing. This is enough for sightseeing and play. However, in order to work in Japan and earn a reasonable amount of money, the next step is to “Work mode level”.
■Greeting mode level (daily conversation); They can live a life
■Work mode level (beginner’s business); You can manage your work.
■Skill mode level (intermediate operation); be able to do one’s job independently
Here is a brief introduction to what the work mode level is. It means that you can do something about your work like a character. This means that in addition to reading, writing, and listening to hiragana and numbers and symbols, you will be able to read, write, and listen to 500 Kanji characters that you will learn by the third year of elementary school. I’m not saying that you should remember 500 Kanji as soon as you come to Japan. Depending on your language skills, I think it’s good to learn 500 Kanji characters over five years. This is less than fifty kanji per month. If you fix it in a week, it’s about ten Kanji. It is important to learn continuously.
Each Kanji has a reading and a japanese reading, and the usage is different. To work in Japan and move to live, you need the following skill mode level (intermediate business). This mode level is to be able to read, write, and listen to 950 Kanji characters that you will learn in the sixth year of compulsory education. It is the best to develop the ability to think. The reason for the society in Japan is that it treats it independently for an independent adult and pays the necessary money. Because you can lead a stable life.
It is up to you to decide whether or not to go to this skill mode level, but I recommend it.
Acceptance in The Izakaya Chain in Japan
Usually, at the head office of the izakaya chain, you will be taught specifically about the words and knowledge necessary to work for three months in the form of training and training, such as full-time trainers and seniors who entered the country earlier. Here, three months may be one month, or half a year, or a year later. Be very careful. Check whether it is an apprenticeship, a provisional hire, or a regular employee recruitment . In addition, there are situations where there are no trainers or seniors.
Before coming to Japan, there are training by agents, but the words and manuals necessary for training and training are mostly in the greeting mode level in the introduction to Japanese. At this level you can’t work in a Izakaya.
After three months of training, foreigners may work at the head office, but most of them are scattered all over Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa. There can be one person, or some people. There may be some people or foreigners already there, or only Japanese people. Please think that the way and the cooking menu are different from the one at the time of the training. There are many houses, and everyone is different. We need the ability and ability to respond to these changes. Both physically and mentally, power and toness are required.
A Concrete Case study of “work mode level” in “Izakaya Chain”
In addition to reading, writing, and listening to hiragana, katakana, numbers and symbols, the “work mode level” allows you to read, write, and listen to 500 Kanji characters that you learn from the first year to the third year of elementary school. So what kind of situation can the izakaya chain consider? It consists of two aspects: A and B.
Aspect A; When you hear an order from a customer
Listen firmly to the type of fish and take notes. The business type is sashimi, round grilling, fillet grilling, boiled fish, dried fish or raw fish and taking notes. Ask for quantity and take notes.
If you have a menu book, be sure to point it to it. Be sure to repeat to the customer that the contents of the last note are correct.
The face is to listen carefully, note, and speak in the head even if it is a smile.
Notes can be hiragana, katakana, numbers or symbols, so have your own skills.
For example, if you order shochu, barley or potato, or brand something (because there are 50 kinds of bottles, so ask often), cold water break or hot water break, dilution ratio how much, whether to put umeboshi, there is a hope of the container.
Aspect B: When you give the customer the item you ordered
It may be the same as the product ordered by the customer, but it is necessary to pay attention to the correspondence when it differs. The most effective is when hiragana, katakana, numbers and symbols are listed in the note. It only has to explain, “It is written here” while showing the note to the customer. If you still don’t understand, you’ll say, “I understand. I’m sorry I made a mistake.” Anyway, while you’re not used to it, you should contact your trainer or senior right away. In such a case, it is a good idea not to make it obstinate so as not to expand. The reason is to be able to put it out to another guest at once such a physical thing etc. if the rotation is a fast shop.
At the end
I said that I need 500 Kanji to be able to work, but I can learn 100 kanji in my first year of elementary school.
In the extreme, it is good even 20 Kanji. A senior who came to Japan earlier, by e-mail on the Internet, is communicating to the home country the know-how of what is actually necessary, what is important, and what to do in advance. This is spreading to many industries. It’s not a bad thing. That’s a good thing.
Let’s get used to it one by one from familiar things and remember it.
