When you introduce yourself at the first meeting, don’t try to shake hands. Japanese businesspeople may feel uncomfortable as they seldom do so. The best way is bowing as they do.

A business card called “Meishi” is treated with respect as Japanese think that it is an extension of their identity. They exchange business cards at the start of the meeting. Bear in mind that you always take your business cards to meetings. When you receive a business card, hold it with both hands and put it in your business card holder. Your wallet or pocket is not the right place.

Silence has much meaning for Japanese, which is opposed to Western culture. For them, silence is wisdom as well as a part of communication. At the beginning of a business relationship, the Japanese are more introverted, so that silence often occurs. Please wait five seconds before you speak.

4.Group solidarity is important

Japanese people prioritise group solidarity more than individuality. For them, public credit for individual praise is uncomfortable and causes them to feel embarrassment. Instead, they’d prefer recognition and appreciation as a group. On top of that, don’t challenge an important person in front of everyone. It is not comfortable for people who respect solidarity. You should better to talk to the person informally after the meeting.

Age is respected in Japan, which has influences on hierarchy in business settings. That is why, in this country, many older people dominate executive positions than any other country. With this mind, show your respect to the senior person first. For example, go to the meeting room before the seniors arrive, don’t interrupt the executives when they are talking, or give them your business card first.

Japanese meetings typically start and end on time. It would help if you were punctual. Another vital thing is that they don’t generally talk about politics, religion or family life in business situations. However, you can talk about those subjects, but it is better not to ask them in the first place.
